Contribution of Arundhati Roy

 Arundhati Roy is one of the best-known representatives of the contemporary generations of Indian writers who write in English. She is also a political activist in human rights and environmental causes. 
Roy's maiden novel "The God of Small Things" was greeted by unprecedented attention from critics, pundits, and the media alike. This story was a very personal account of a tragic love story cutting across the caste, religion, political divides of India, as told through the eyes of twin children. Daring in its theme and innovative in its concept and language, the novel had many detractors in India but won international acclaim and secured the author the prestigious Booker Prize for the best novel by a Commonwealth author.
In the intervening years Roy had used her celebrity status in India to write instead in defence of causes she believes in, to become,"a writer for the victims of Modernity." In1999, Roy pointed her sharp pen against the Narmada Dam, under construction in the states of M.P. and Gujarat in anpther highly critical essay entitled "The Greater Common Good".
After the success of her first novel, she has written a telivision serial, 'The Banyan Tree' and the documentary DAM/AGE: A Film with Arundhati Roy(2002). She contributed to "We Are One : The Celebration of Tribal Peoples" released in 2009., that explores the culture of people around the world, portraying their diversities and the threats to their existance. Her second novel, "The Ministry of Utmost Happiness" published in June2017. The novel was chosen for the Man Booker Prize Long List. 
She has written numerous essays on contemporary politics and culture. Once she was charged with sedition by Delhi police for her "anti-India" speech at a 2010 convention on Kashmir: "Azadi: The Only Way". She has awarded the Sydney Peace Prize for the work in social campaigns and her advocacy of non-violence.
